Why I Created Nourishing Teens & Tweens

Why I Created Nourishing Teens & Tweens

Danette Ashraf

For years, one question has come up again and again in my consultations:

“What should my child actually be eating?”

Parents would ask me about picky eating, breakfast ideas, lunchboxes, snacks, sugar, nutrients, growing bodies, energy levels, and how to make healthier choices without turning every meal into a battle.

And honestly, I found myself giving the same kind of nutritional guidance over and over again.

So I decided it was time to put it all in one place.

Introducing Nourishing Tweens & Teens

My new Nourishing Tweens & Teens book was created because I wanted families to have a practical, easy-to-understand resource they could return to again and again.

It brings together the nutritional information, guidance and knowledge that I often share during my consultations—but in a format you can have at home, refer back to whenever you need it, and work through together as a family.

Because nutrition isn't just about what we put on a plate.

It's about understanding why our bodies need certain nutrients, how food supports growing bodies and brains, and how the choices we make every day can contribute to our overall wellbeing.

But here's the thing…

Although the title says Tweens & Teens, this book really isn't just for tweens and teens.

I've called it that because this is such an important stage of life. Children are growing rapidly, their brains are developing, hormones are changing, and they're beginning to make more of their own food choices.

But the information inside is relevant to the whole family.

A toddler can benefit from learning about nourishing foods.

A 10-year-old can start understanding what their growing body needs.

A teenager can learn how to make informed choices for themselves.

And parents can use the information to better understand how to nourish their children—and themselves.

Even adults can learn something new.

Because sometimes we spend so much time worrying about what our children should be eating that we forget that we need nourishment too.

I wanted this to be practical—not overwhelming

There is so much nutrition information available today.

One person tells us to avoid carbohydrates.

Another tells us we need more protein.

Someone else says we should cut out this food or that food.

And social media can make nutrition feel incredibly complicated.

My goal with this book was to simplify things.

I wanted to give families knowledge rather than fear.

To help you understand food and nutrition without feeling that you have to follow a perfect diet.

Because healthy eating doesn't have to mean perfection.

It's about learning, making better choices where we can, and creating healthy habits that can grow with our children.

It's about more than food

One of the things I really wanted to emphasise in this book is that nutrition doesn't exist in isolation.

Our children's wellbeing is influenced by so much more than what is on their plate.

That's why I've included sections looking at:

  • Sleep — why quality sleep matters so much for growing bodies, brains, mood and energy.
  • Screens — understanding how our relationship with technology can influence sleep, movement, focus and overall wellbeing.
  • Energy — helping children understand where their energy comes from and why they can sometimes feel tired, sluggish or unable to concentrate.
  • Gut health — because the gut plays such an important role in digestion, immunity and overall wellbeing.
  • Shopping without breaking the bank — because nourishing your family shouldn't have to mean spending a fortune.

From my consultation room to your home

This book is really an extension of the work I already do with families.

So many of you have asked me for something you could take home after a consultation—a resource that explains nutrition in a way that is simple, practical and easy to revisit.

This is that resource.

I hope it becomes something you keep in your kitchen, share with your children, talk about around the dinner table and return to as your family grows.

Because when we teach our children about their bodies and the food that nourishes them, we're giving them something that goes far beyond one meal.

We're giving them knowledge they can carry with them for life.

And that is exactly why I created Nutrition for Tweens & Teens.

It's written with growing children in mind, but there's something in it for everyone.

With Love & Healing,

Danette Ashraf
