Homeopathy Is a Journey: Why One Consultation May Not Be the Whole Story

Homeopathy Is a Journey: Why One Consultation May Not Be the Whole Story

Danette Ashraf

We live in a world where we expect quick answers.

One doctor's appointment.
One prescription.
One solution.

And while there are certainly times when a single homeopathic consultation and prescription can bring about a meaningful change, chronic and long-standing health concerns are often much more complex than that.

This is one of the reasons I see homeopathy as a journey rather than a quick fix.

Your first consultation may be the beginning of understanding your health in a completely different way.

Your symptoms are only part of your story

When you come for a homeopathic consultation, I don't simply look at the symptom you are experiencing.

If you tell me you have eczema, headaches, digestive problems, recurring infections or difficulty sleeping, I don't want to simply find a remedy that has a reputation for treating that particular condition.

I want to understand you.

What makes your symptoms unique?

When did they begin?

What was happening in your life around that time?

What makes them better or worse?

How do you sleep?

How do you respond to stress?

What happens emotionally when life becomes difficult?

What other symptoms do you experience?

What patterns have been present throughout your life?

These details help create a much more complete picture of the individual sitting in front of me.

Because two people can have the exact same diagnosis but have completely different experiences of it.

And in homeopathy, that individual picture matters.

Sometimes the first layer is what brought you through the door

Think of your health as having layers.

The layer you are most aware of is often the one that brings you to a consultation.

Perhaps it is the digestive problem that has been bothering you for years.

Perhaps it is your child's recurring coughs.

Perhaps your eczema has returned for the fifth time.

Perhaps you are struggling with your sleep, your energy or your menstrual cycle.

That is the problem you can see.

But underneath it may be a much bigger picture.

As we begin working together, that picture can change.

Symptoms may improve. Other symptoms may become clearer. Old patterns may return. Emotional patterns may shift. You may suddenly remember something that happened years ago that you hadn't thought was relevant.

New information becomes available because you are changing.

And this is where follow-up consultations can become so valuable.

The first remedy isn't necessarily the last remedy

One of the things I often explain to patients is that a follow-up consultation isn't simply about asking:

“Are you better?”

There is so much more to observe.

We look at what has changed since the previous consultation.

Has the original complaint improved?

Has your sleep changed?

Has your energy changed?

Has your digestion changed?

Are you responding differently to stress?

Have old symptoms returned?

Have new symptoms appeared?

Has something that you've struggled with for years suddenly become less important?

Sometimes the changes are obvious.

Sometimes they are subtle.

And sometimes the most important thing that happens is that your case becomes clearer.

That may mean that the original prescription is still doing its work and no new prescription is needed.

Other times, your current picture may indicate that a different prescription is appropriate.

The point is not to prescribe simply because you have another appointment.

The point is to observe, understand and respond to the person as they are now.

Healing doesn't always happen in a straight line

We often imagine healing as a straight line:

symptoms → remedy → better

But real life doesn't always work that way.

Especially when someone has been dealing with a concern for many years, there may be a lot of history behind what they are experiencing today.

There can be physical patterns, emotional experiences, lifestyle factors, stresses and previous health events that all form part of their story.

As things change, the picture can change too.

That's why I don't believe in forcing a predetermined treatment plan onto every patient.

Every person is different.

Some people may only need a few consultations.

Others with more long-standing or complex concerns may benefit from being followed over a longer period of time.

There is no universal number of appointments and no one-size-fits-all timeline.

The journey should be guided by the individual and the changes taking place, rather than an arbitrary schedule.

Think of it as peeling back the layers

I often think of the process like peeling back layers of an onion.

You can only work with the layer that is visible to you at that moment.

As that layer changes, you may become aware of something underneath it.

And then another layer may reveal itself.

This doesn't automatically mean that something has gone wrong.

It can simply mean that there is now more information available than there was before.

Your first consultation gives me a starting point.

Your follow-up gives me an opportunity to see how your individual picture has evolved.

And over time, we may begin to recognize patterns that weren't obvious at the beginning.

Sometimes the best thing to do is wait

An important part of responsible homeopathic practice is knowing when not to prescribe.

If someone is improving, sometimes the best thing we can do is simply observe.

There is no need to continually introduce something new just because a consultation has taken place.

Your body needs time.

Your symptoms need to be observed.

And your response needs to be understood.

Follow-up consultations are therefore not about automatically receiving another remedy.

They are about reviewing the journey and deciding what, if anything, is needed next.

Homeopathy is about the person, not just the problem

This is ultimately why I love the way I practice homeopathy.

I don't want you to feel like a list of symptoms on a piece of paper.

I want to understand the person behind those symptoms.

And sometimes, getting to the deeper picture takes time.

Your first consultation can be the beginning

If you've been struggling with the same health concern for years, constantly treating one symptom only for another to appear, it may be worth taking a step back and looking at the bigger picture.

A homeopathic consultation isn't necessarily about finding a quick answer.

It can be about beginning a process of understanding why your health looks the way it does and what makes your experience uniquely yours.

Sometimes the journey is short.

Sometimes it takes longer.

Sometimes the first prescription is exactly what you need.

Sometimes your picture changes and we need to reassess.

And sometimes the most important thing is simply to give your body time and observe.

There is no need to rush the journey.

Your health has a story.

And sometimes, you need more than one conversation to understand the whole story.
