A Story That Illustrates the Homeopathic Perspective

A Story That Illustrates the Homeopathic Perspective

Danette Ashraf

I'll call her Sarah.

Sarah's health journey didn't begin with eczema.

As a baby, she struggled with recurrent respiratory illnesses. Every few weeks it seemed there was another chest infection, another bout of wheezing, another prescription. Throughout her infancy she received repeated courses of cortisone-based medication to help manage her breathing. Each time, the respiratory symptoms improved, and understandably, her parents were relieved.

But as the years went by, something changed.

The chest problems became less frequent, yet a new challenge emerged.

Sarah developed eczema.

What started as small patches gradually became a persistent part of her life. She was prescribed steroid creams, moisturizers, lotions, supplements, dietary changes, and countless other treatments. Some would help for a while, but the eczema always seemed to return.

Sadly, this is only where people start to look for a homeopath.

I made her realize that we need to understand why her body had been struggling for so many years.

Looking Through a Homeopathic Lens

One of the concepts in homeopathy is that symptoms are not random—they are the body's way of expressing an underlying disturbance.

Homeopaths also have a concept known as suppression. In homeopathic philosophy, when symptoms are repeatedly silenced without addressing the person's overall imbalance, the body may express that disturbance in a different way over time.

Using Sarah's story as an example, a homeopath might ask:

"Was the eczema simply a skin condition that appeared years later, or was it part of the same pattern of imbalance that first showed itself through her respiratory illnesses?"

This way of thinking differs from conventional medicine, which generally views eczema and respiratory conditions as separate diseases that may share common risk factors such as allergies or genetics.

Homeopathy instead looks for the thread connecting the person's entire health history.

Rather than asking, "How do we stop the rash?" we ask, "What has this person's body been trying to tell us all along?"

This is what Sarah's timeline looked like:

Age 0-3: Recurrent chest infections → repeated cortisone treatments
Age 4-12: Chest improves → eczema begins and controlled with cortisone creams
Age 12: Hayfever develops
Age 20: Skin better → anxiety and digestive issues appear
Age 35: Finally seeks homeopathic care.

Treating the Person, Not the Diagnosis

During Sarah's consultation, we spent almost two hours discussing far more than her skin.

We explored her childhood illnesses, emotional wellbeing, fears, sleep patterns, food cravings, reactions to temperature, digestion, energy levels, family history, and significant life events.

To someone unfamiliar with homeopathy, these questions can seem unrelated to eczema.

But to a homeopath, they are essential.

The remedy is selected not because a person has eczema, but because it matches the unique pattern of the individual sitting in front of us.

Over the following months, Sarah's progress wasn't measured only by the appearance of her skin.

She began sleeping more soundly. Her energy improved. She felt calmer. She no longer experienced the same level of recurring health complaints. Gradually, her eczema became less frequent and less intense.

For Sarah, the greatest change wasn't simply that her skin improved.

It was that she finally felt healthy again.

That is the aim of homeopathy: not simply to help one symptom disappear, but to support the whole person.
